MUMBAI, INDIA — Maharashtra, a major state in western India, has secured a landmark ₹1 trillion (US$12 billion) investment to develop large-scale data centers, a move that could cement the state’s position as a leading digital and technology hub.

According to a report from the Construction World, the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Government of Maharashtra and Lodha Developers during the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos, in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Lodha Group CEO Abhishek Lodha.

“This investment reinforces Maharashtra’s ambition to emerge as a global technology [center],” officials said, emphasizing the project’s potential to create around 150,000 jobs and drive economic growth in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Green data centers to power India’s AI and cloud growth

The US$12 billion initiative focuses on the information technology sector, together with the IT-enabled services sector, by building advanced data centers throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The project will use Maharashtra’s Green Integrated Data Center policy to implement sustainable energy solutions that meet international environmental standards, according to the MoU.

“These facilities will provide the backend infrastructure required to support India’s growing demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing,” the state government noted, highlighting the strategic importance of the development in meeting global digital demands.

Lodha Developers has expanded its business operations into digital infrastructure development, which represents its first major company expansion since it began its work in residential and commercial real estate development.

What Maharashtra’s data center push means for BPOs

The expansion of digital infrastructure is expected to benefit Maharashtra’s thriving outsourcing sector.

Major business process outsourcing (BPO) and IT services firms operating in the state—including Ascent BPO, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys BPM, Wipro BPO, WNS Global Services, Tech Mahindra, Capgemini BPO, Cognizant, Firstsource Solutions, Hinduja Global Solutions (HGS), Exela Technologies, and Suma Soft—rely heavily on secure and scalable data center capabilities to manage client operations efficiently.

Officials said that the funding will be used for high-capacity infrastructure support requirements for the IT and cloud needs of these companies.

Maharashtra has accounted for 60% of India’s operational data center capacity, which is expected to further enhance the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s stature as a ‘Digital Backbone’ for local and global outsourcing operations.

The Lodha MoU agreement indicates that companies will increasingly invest in technology-based assets because this development will help businesses compete better in the IT and outsourcing markets.

Maharashtra develops its digital infrastructure through sustainable practices, which enable the state to become India’s financial capital and a global technology BPO operations center that delivers economic development and technological stability.
