Majority of Filipino nurses switch to BPO jobs

Most Filipino nurses have resigned their hospital jobs and are working in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry or as company nurses due to the low salary and physical exhaustion, said Nurses’ Union Secretary Benjie Foscablo.
Recently, the Department of Health (DOH) has released an appeal against the mass resignation of nurses which comprises 70% of a hospital’s manpower.
“Actually, [the mass resignation] has been going on for the past two weeks already. About 40% of nurses (across the country) had resigned,” Foscablo said, stating data from the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines Inc.
The union secretary added that the resignations will continue unless the government creates a law that would increase the nurses’ salary in private facilities.
Unlike nurses in public hospitals who have a standardized salary and higher entry rate due to the standardization law, nurses in private hospitals are minimum wage earners who earn P537 (approximately US$10) per day.
Foscablo said that they are currently talking with various unions in 10 private hospitals in Metro Manila areas to come up with a unified demand and solution to their grievances.
