Meta enforces 3-day office workweek
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Social media giant Meta now requires staff who aren’t designated as remote to be in the office three days a week.
According to CNBC, this move has been in the pipeline since June and is officially in effect since September 5, 2023.
Meta was optimistic about remote work and maintaining productivity at the pandemic’s outset, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg envisioning up to half the workforce going remote in the next ten years.
However, as time passed, the company found that certain tasks proved less effective through digital channels.
Earlier this year, Zuckerberg noted in an internal memo that face-to-face interactions help build trust and improve work efficacy. This shift is particularly beneficial for newer and younger employees.
The change is also part of Meta’s broader strategy to enhance organizational efficiency and speed, a push that has also led to some restructuring and layoffs.
Other tech giants in Silicon Valley are following suit, with both Google and Amazon implementing similar three-day in-office work weeks. Amazon has started enforcing penalties on employees who will not be in the office three days a week.
Remarkably, even Zoom is mandating in-person days, signaling a general tech industry reversal from its work-from-home model.
