Mexico-based SMEs continue remote work despite not meeting regulations

Most small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Mexico have continued working remotely despite not meeting the country’s strict law on teleworking, according to a survey conducted by Microsoft.
The US computing giant’s study shows that only 10% of SMEs can afford to follow the country’s legal requirements for remote working, while two-thirds are not able to comply.
Earlier this year, the Mexican federal government passed a law that regulates remote work as businesses started this new work condition in response to the pandemic.
The new law stated that companies must provide computing devices to their employees and must pay the cost of internet and electricity used during work hours.
Microsoft’s research also noted that an increasing rate of cyberattacks in Mexico is causing SMEs worry. However, most of them cannot afford to provide tech training to their staff or move their data onto the cloud.
