Millennial tech worker earns $368,000 juggling three jobs

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Damien, a millennial in the Mountain West, expects to earn around $368,000 this year by working three full-time remote IT jobs

Despite his high income, he feels no guilt or loyalty toward his employers.

“As long as I’m doing my job and what’s asked of me, I don’t feel any guilt for it at all,” Damien told the Business Insider, underlining a lack of job security as his main reason for this sentiment. He expressed a pragmatic view of employment: “They can let you go at any point.”

Life of luxury and strategic savings

The substantial earnings have enabled Damien’s wife to leave her job and consider her career options. Damien has spent his income on quality-of-life improvements such as new furniture, dining out, and traveling extensively. “I was at a point where I had so much cash, I didn’t even know what to do with it,” he remarked.

From overemployment risks to rewards

Damien is part of a growing group of “overemployed” workers who leverage multiple remote roles to boost their earnings. While holding multiple jobs without employer approval could lead to burnout or professional repercussions, Damien has found the financial benefits outweigh the risks.

Since September 2023, Damien has been working two full-time roles: one paying $150,000 annually and another paying $140,000. He recently added a third contract position that will pay him $78,000 through the end of the year.

Despite juggling these roles, Damien averages no more than 40 hours of work per week and manages overlapping meetings with creative solutions like wearing two sets of headphones simultaneously.

“I just have a hard time saying no,” Damien admitted. “If I could squeeze it in, then why not?”

Balancing act and future plans

Since first experimenting with multiple jobs in 2021, Damien has refined his approach to avoid conflicts and manage his time effectively.

His confidence has grown, and he intends to continue as long as it doesn’t negatively impact his life.

Despite potential professional risks and the increasing demand for in-office presence, Damien remains committed to his path of multiple remote employment. “I figure I’ll do it as long as I don’t feel like it’s negatively affecting my life,” he explained.
