Mount Sinai opens $100M AI health research center
NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Mount Sinai Health System recently launched the Hamilton and Amabel James Center for Artificial Intelligence and Human Health, a $100 million research facility dedicated to revolutionizing healthcare through artificial intelligence (AI).
Located at the heart of The Mount Sinai Hospital campus in Manhattan, New York, this 12-story, 65,000-square-foot facility is among the first of its kind at a U.S. medical school.
The center will house 40 principal investigators alongside 250 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, computer scientists, and support staff. Its mission is to integrate AI with genomics, imaging, pathology, and electronic health records to enhance disease diagnosis and treatment.
Advancing genomics, imaging, and personalized medicine
The center’s eight AI-focused floors will host several key initiatives:
- Windreich Department of AI and Human Health: Developing an “AI Fabric” to integrate machine learning across Mount Sinai’s eight hospitals.
- Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health: Advancing wearable technology and biomedical engineering through international collaboration.
- Institute for Genomic Health: Using genomic discovery to tackle diseases like cancer and heart conditions.
- Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Institute: Pioneering multimodality imaging and nanomedicine research.
- Institute for Personalized Medicine: Leading the Mount Sinai Million Health Discoveries Program to improve precision medicine for diverse populations.
AI integration across Mount Sinai’s eight hospitals
The center was made possible by a generous donation from Hamilton James, Vice Chairman of Blackstone, and his wife Amabel. The building was modernized to meet contemporary standards while aligning with the aesthetic of Mount Sinai’s campus.
“This moment is critical for maintaining leadership in digital health,” said Eric Nestler, Chief Scientific Officer at Mount Sinai Health System. “The Hamilton and Amabel James Center will cultivate an optimal environment for researchers to deepen their understanding of human diseases—including the most debilitating—and advance overall health.”
Dennis Charney, MD, Dean of Icahn Mount Sinai, highlighted the importance of academic leadership in AI research: “This new AI research center at Icahn Mount Sinai will yield transformative discoveries in human health by the integration of research and data, fostering collaboration across multiple programs under one roof.”
A new era in medical innovation
With this launch, Mount Sinai continues its legacy of innovation in health care. From its early adoption of supercomputing with Minerva in 2013 to this cutting-edge AI hub, the institution is setting new benchmarks for integrating technology into medicine.
