Nepal drives digital transformation through IT reforms
KATHMANDU, NEPAL — A Nepali minister has detailed the ongoing groundwork for policy, legal, and structural reforms of the country’s information technology (IT) sector.
In her speech at the IT Journalists Forum, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma explained that the reform agenda focuses on strengthening cybersecurity, accelerating digitization initiatives, spurring technology adoption across sectors, and developing homegrown human capital and IT manufacturing capabilities.
The introduction of Nepal‘s first National Cyber Security Policy lays the foundations for robust cyber defenses and data protection by recognizing evolving threats from cyber-attacks and data breaches. Sharma shared that the government is working on a corresponding cybersecurity law that aligns with global best practices.
The delayed Digital Nepal Acceleration (DNA) project is also being restructured to speed up digitization efforts across e-governance, healthcare, education, and other key areas under the Digital Nepal framework.
Beyond digitization, policies aimed at expanding IT infrastructure, encouraging remote work, promoting domestic manufacturing, and building technology skills also form key pillars of the IT overhaul.
While acknowledging the reforms’ ambitious scope, Sharma reassured everyone that the new policies serve national interests and should not raise privacy or rights concerns.
With a focus on homegrown solutions and global integration, the IT policy revamp sets the stage for Nepal to harness technology’s transformative potential at scale.
