Net-zero promises from tech companies not enough for sustainability - Industry specialist

Several major tech companies are making commitments to reach zero-net emissions in their operations over the next decades. However, low carbon energy and industry specialist Michael Zdanowski said that these promises are not enough.

In an interview with Nearshore Americas, Zdanowski stated that “Microsoft, Google, and other tech companies are under real scrutiny to deliver on their net-zero goals” as people are seeing only a few actions towards sustainability.

Microsoft promised to be carbon negative by 2030 and to remove its historical emissions by 2050, while Facebook claims that they have reached net zero in its operations.

Meanwhile, Digital services giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said that they are looking to reach carbon neutrality in its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030.

Considering the “Greenwashing” trend that companies tend to navigate to, Zdanowski suggested several actions to actively reach the goal.

He noted that companies — especially outsourcing agencies — who want to become more environmentally friendly have to look for partners who have signed up to the 2030 Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, and start using sustainable material, among other things.

Zdanowski concluded that “the business world is moving towards a net-zero moment and those companies who aren’t moving with it will lose out.”
