OpenAI unveils GPT-4 Turbo, slashes developer costs

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — At its inaugural developer conference, OpenAI unveiled the next iteration of its groundbreaking generative artificial intelligence (AI) system, GPT-4 Turbo.

Powered by a 128,000 token context window, GPT-4 Turbo can process the equivalent of 300 pages of text in a single prompt. This expanded memory enables more meaningful conversations and retention of context across interactions.

GPT-4 Turbo also possesses knowledge of events up to April 2023, unlike its predecessor GPT-4, which is limited to 2021. OpenAI aims to continuously update its AI models to prevent information stagnation.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, an early partner of OpenAI, joined CEO Sam Altman on stage to discuss how his company continues to infuse GPT technology into its suite of 365 tools.

“It’s so different and new,” he said. “I’ve been in the infrastructure business for three decades – and never seen anything like this.”

Expivia & Expivia Digital CEO Thomas Laird was impressed by GPT-4 Turbo, saying it’s “way faster” than the old model and a “game changer” for their OttoQa product, an AI-driven quality assurance automation solution for contact centers.

For developers, OpenAI has slashed pricing to boost accessibility and democratize AI. GPT-4 Turbo input tokens are 3 times cheaper, and output tokens are 2 times cheaper than GPT-4.

The company also launched the Assistants API to simplify building specialized AI apps that leverage models and tools. And introduced multimodal capabilities like vision, text-to-speech and DALL-E 3 image generation.

Additionally, OpenAI unveiled GPTs – customizable versions of ChatGPT for specific use cases. GPTs will be shareable on the upcoming GPT Store with monetization based on usage.

For enterprises, the Custom Models program enables tailored GPT-4 training on proprietary data. OpenAI is expanding its commercial offerings but remains committed to responsible AI development.

“GPTs will continue to get more useful and smarter, and you’ll eventually be able to let them take on real tasks in the real world,” the company said in a blog post.
