CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — OpenAI has launched a new feature called ChatGPT Pulse, shifting its chatbot from a reactive tool to a proactive assistant.

Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of OpenAI, announced this in a post on X, noting that this move, currently focused on personalized daily briefings, is being closely watched by crypto leaders who see it as a critical step toward autonomous AI agents executing financial transactions.

OpenAI moves toward proactive AI assistants

The feature, initially available to Pro subscribers, is designed to work overnight, analyzing a user’s interests, connected data, and recent chats to generate a custom briefing each morning. This transforms the user experience from one of direct query-and-response to one of continuous, background assistance.

The plan is to utilize ChatGPT as a highly capable personal assistant, one that can proactively align with the mutual interests of users, heralding the future of highly proactive AI and highly personalized services.

This shift is strategically significant as it begins to normalize the concept of AI with agency. Instead of merely answering questions, ChatGPT Pulse sifts through calendars, emails, and past conversations to assemble a snapshot of the day ahead.

By conditioning users to accept an AI that works autonomously in the background, OpenAI is laying the groundwork for more advanced agentic capabilities.

ChatGPT Pulse and the future of AI assistants

As the technology evolves, Pulse aims to handle increasingly complex responsibilities such as scheduling, drafting communications, and researching personalized insights, effectively serving as a virtual secretary.

Tech Times reports that this can also become a lifesaver for those going through their daily routine and an invaluable resource for those seeking productivity, who would like to streamline their daily tasks. This new system is a multitasking toolkit designed to solve their issues.

According to a separate report by The Times of India, the company is framing this as an early look, with plans to improve quality and eventually extend access to Plus subscribers and all ChatGPT users, indicating a long-term commitment to this proactive model.

The vision, as stated by OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, is to democratize high-level support that was previously only affordable to the wealthiest, as the subscription starts at $200 per month.

Moreover, this aggressive pivot toward AI agents marks a strategic arms race among tech titans like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, all of which are investing heavily to fulfill a long-envisioned future where such tools autonomously handle complex tasks, from booking travel to creating business presentations.

“The next frontier is agents: AI assistants that can take action on your behalf and work like a team alongside you,” Simo noted, as reported by The Verge.

Pulse has the potential to greatly simplify operations and reduce cognitive load, enabling users to focus on more value-added tasks. This is an indicator of a radical redefinition of the human-AI work process, as it will not be about human querying, but rather a strategic management perspective, and preconditions the AI to conduct our cognitive load and redefine the future of work.
