Over 70% of cell service in typhoon-hit areas already restored — DICT
Local telecommunication companies Globe and Smart have restored more than 70% of their service in areas affected by Typhoon Odette, according to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
In a televised briefing in Malacañang, DICT Acting Secretary Emmanuel Rey R. Caintic said that 95% of Globe’s cell sites in Palawan, 60% in the Visayas, and 64% in Mindanao are already operational. The company’s overall restoration is already at 73%.
Meanwhile, Smart has fixed 70% of its operations in Palawan, 78% in the Visayas, and 60% in Mindanao, with overall restoration at 71%.
New telecom provider DITO repaired “above 75%” of its sites in Mindanao and 70% in Leyte, reaching an overall restoration rate of “above 55%.”
In an e-mailed statement, Globe said that they are extending the due dates of affected Globe At Home and Globe Platinum and Postpaid mobile customers to January 2.
PLDT, on the other hand, stated that they are “ramping up” their restoration efforts in Bohol and Cebu. In addition, the company opened free call, charging, and Wi-Fi stations in over 40 typhoon-hit places in Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao.
