PH should look into the sustainability concerns of data centers — JLL
The Philippine government should consider the concerns of greenhouse emissions of the data centers in deciding where to locate these investments, said global real estate consultant JLL.
JLL Philippines Energy and Sustainability Manager Nix Garchitorena said, “Addressing concerns surrounding greenhouse emissions is a priority, especially when it comes to our energy and sustainability practices in the Philippines.”
In a report, JLL revealed that 85% of data center managers in the Asia Pacific believe that sustainability will significantly impact their operations and decision-making, confirming that the growth of the sector will increasingly be influenced by environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations.
Sustainability refers to the conservation of the environment and making sure that the present generation will not compromise the ability of the next generations to meet their needs.
According to JLL’s analysis, becoming more sustainable and socially responsible is the top strategic priority for data centers in the next two years.
Driven by net-zero carbon ambitions, owners and operators are expected to prioritize the reduction of power consumption, waste, and increased usage of renewable energy sources.
Half of JLL’s respondents highlight that they will implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered cooling technology in their data center by 2023.
JLL Philippines’ Director for Capital Markets Charlie McNaught added that it is “critical” to put more emphasis on environmental considerations to ensure that the data center investments in the country are “future-proofed.”
