PH unemployment down to 10% in July – gov’t

The Philippines’ unemployment rate managed to decline despite the pandemic, as the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that it eased to 10 per cent in July 2020 – equivalent to around 4.6 million jobless Filipinos.
The latest figure is lower than the 17.7% last April, which is the highest unemployment rate on record. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment was only at 5.3% in January, or 2.4 million people, and 5.1% in April 2019 or 2.3 million people.
Further, the top five major sectors with the largest employment drop were: (1) arts, entertainment, and recreation; (2) accommodation and food service activities; (3) information and communication; (4) fishing and aquaculture; and (5) professional, scientific, and technical activities.
