MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The Philippines’ healthcare business process outsourcing (BPO) sector is embracing applied learning to strengthen its workforce amid rapid technological and market changes, according to a report from the Manila Standard

With the Healthcare Information Management Services (HIMS) industry expected to grow at 9 percent annually through 2028 according to global market analysts, experts warn that traditional training methods are no longer enough to prepare employees for the challenges of modern healthcare outsourcing.

Applied learning: A new approach to upskilling

Carelon Global Solutions Philippines managing director for clinical operations and Healthcare Information Management Association of the Philippines (HIMAP) board member Salin Kataria described the sector as facing a “triple-layered wave of disruption” from AI and automation, geopolitical shifts, and changing market trends.

She emphasized that applied learning, which allows employees to develop their skills through actual work environments, provides better training for talent to overcome these difficulties.

“Applied learning elevates skills to the point where they can address real-time challenges,” Kataria said, highlighting the need for training that goes beyond conventional classroom or online modules.

Carelon’s Clinical Advancement University has implemented programs combining online modules, mentorship, and scenario-based exercises.

A pilot program indicated a 21 percent improvement in skills scores, demonstrating the effectiveness of immersive learning techniques.

Integrating mentorship into healthcare workforce development

Kataria stressed that for HIMS companies, success lies in designing training programs around real cases and ongoing team evaluations.

“Online learning combined with mentorship helps translate skills into daily work,” she said

The method enables nurses and healthcare staff members to manage intricate clinical assessments together with value-based medical treatments while their education directly improves their work performance.

A strategic response to global competition

Applied learning is not just a short-term fix; it is a strategic response to industry-wide disruptions.

The Philippine HIMS sector requires practical training programs that use real-life scenarios to maintain its reputation for producing world-class professionals who can meet changing international requirements.

As the global landscape becomes increasingly reliant on telehealth and remote patient monitoring, the ability of Filipino agents to navigate complex Electronic Health Records (EHR) and insurance coding systems in real-time is paramount. This hands-on evolution ensures that the country does not just provide labor but provides specialized expertise that can pivot as fast as the technology does.

The outsourcing industry needs to understand that the applied learning approach shows its main lesson that businesses must continuously develop their workforce skills to maintain their competitive advantage.

Philippine healthcare BPOs establish their leadership position in the global market through their use of integrated mentorship programs, actual case studies and digital technologies, which prove that companies can develop talent with both adaptive and scalable methods during times of disruption.
