Philippines, India boost defense, tech ties amid BPO growth

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — As the Philippines and India mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, both nations are setting their sights on deeper partnerships across strategic industries, signaling a new era of economic and technological cooperation, according to a report from ABS-CBN News.
According to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce Inc. (FICCI), opportunities are emerging in defense, business process outsourcing (BPO), artificial intelligence (AI), manufacturing, and tourism.
Defense, BPO, and AI at the forefront
FICCI President Mahesh Mirpuri highlighted ongoing government-to-government initiatives in the defense sector, noting that collaboration is already taking shape.
“As you can see, were already working government to government in the defense sector as well as our BPO and especially now AI seems to be the next play of which India Philippines is definitely a good way to work together,” Mirpuri said.
He also emphasized that AI is expected to create opportunities rather than replace human jobs.
“I really feel AI will really come into play to help businesses,” he added, underscoring the potential for the two countries to jointly explore innovations in this emerging field.
Beyond defense and AI, the BPO industry remains a growth area, reflecting the Philippines’ long-standing role as a global outsourcing hub and India’s expertise in technology and process management.
Manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism prospects
The manufacturing sector is another area where collaboration could thrive, particularly with the integration of modern machinery and technology.
Mirpuri pointed out, “If we can bring down cost in our country then it will be good for everybody.”
Likewise, agriculture in both countries is expected to benefit from advanced technology and machinery, enhancing productivity and competitiveness.
Tourism is also poised for growth, aided by visa-free access and direct flights between the two nations.
“This is going to enhance and boost people to people interaction between both countries and with people to people interaction there’s going to be an uptick in tourism for both sides,” said FICCI Honorary Rex Daryanani, highlighting the broader social and economic benefits of strengthened bilateral ties.
Outsourcing industry poised for further growth
From an industry perspective, the evolving India-Philippines partnership could reshape the global outsourcing landscape. With AI integration and enhanced BPO collaboration, businesses in both countries may gain efficiency while creating new high-value roles, reflecting a shift toward knowledge-intensive operations.
This collaboration positions the Philippines and India not only as strong ASEAN partners but also as global players capable of offering competitive outsourcing solutions in an increasingly tech-driven world.
