PHL fixed broadband speed up — Ookla
MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The Philippines shows progress in its efforts to boost internet speed to support its digitization drive.
According to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index report, the country’s fixed broadband saw an improved median speed of 90.03Mbps (megabytes per second) in February from the 88.13Mbps recorded in January. The average fixed broadband speed was at 142.57Mbps, up by 18.95% since July 2022.
This follows efforts by telecom firms to build more cellular towers and fiber optic networks.
The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said that the recent improvement could be attributed to streamlining the permit issuance process for telecommunication companies.
“We are also happy that Elon Musk’s Starlink is also now available in the country to give Filipinos in underserved and unserved areas fast and reliable internet,” said NTC Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez.
Starlink’s satellite internet services, which offer download speeds between 100 and 200 Mbps, went live in February this year.
The Philippines is among the countries with the slowest internet speeds. It is also the most ‘internet poor‘ in Southeast Asia.
To address this, the Philippines recently launched “Broadband ng Masa”, an initiative that gives broadband internet access to rural areas.
