Remote-first CEO embraces work-from-anywhere policy

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — ParkMyFleet’s CEO Mike Landau has embraced remote work, transforming his views on workplace dynamics and employee productivity.

Despite a shift back to office mandates by other companies, Landau remains committed to a remote framework, citing enhanced work-life balance and high employee retention as key reasons.

The evolution of a remote-first mindset

Landau’s journey from office advocate to remote work champion began with necessity but evolved into a strategic advantage.

“Before that, I firmly believed that you need to be in the office to build the team and have cohesion, but my thoughts on that changed completely during the pandemic,” Landau told Business Insider

This shift allowed ParkMyFleet to tap into a global talent pool, unrestricted by geographical boundaries.

“As the company grew, I became increasingly enamored with remote work. From a recruitment perspective, the world is my oyster. I like that employees don’t have to think about their commute or can still do the school pickup, which helps their work-life balance,” Landau added

Balancing remote work with team cohesion

While embracing remote work, ParkMyFleet hasn’t abandoned face-to-face interactions entirely. The company organizes quarterly team-building events and maintains a camera-on policy for virtual meetings. Landau believes these practices help foster connections among team members.

Collaboration has also improved in the remote setting, according to Landau. “I find it a lot easier to collaborate remotely, especially with things like sharing a screen online, rather than having people huddled around one screen and looking at something or trying to connect to a projector in a conference room.”

Adapting to remote work challenges

Landau acknowledges the unique challenges remote work presents, especially for new hires accustomed to office environments.

“It could be daunting for new hires… understanding the internal plumbing of the business,” he noted. To ease the transition, ParkMyFleet incorporates regular video calls to help newcomers integrate and familiarize themselves with team dynamics.

As other companies, like Amazon, call for a return to office, Landau stands firm in his decision to maintain a remote-first environment. “As an employee who joined a company as a remote worker, it would feel like a bait-and-switch move if the CEO then decided to change the remote work policy,” he said, emphasizing the importance of consistency in workplace policies.

Landau also recognizes that some companies may benefit from in-person work environments. “Large organizations like Amazon may need that level of connectivity,” he remarked, adding that each company must assess what aligns best with its goals.

Landau remains confident that remote work aligns well with ParkMyFleet’s agile growth model, allowing him to “get the right people in the right roles quickly and efficiently.”

For his company, the pros of remote work significantly outweigh any potential cons, and he has no plans to change the policy. “I have no intention of mandating a return to the office,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to flexibility and employee autonomy.

Aside from ParkMyFleet, other companies that implement a work-from-anywhere policy are Atlassian and Autodesk. Meanwhile, Microsoft, Google, Starbucks, and Spotify maintain their flexible or remote work policy.
