Salesforce axes 4,000 customer support jobs as AI takes over tasks
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Salesforce has reduced its support staff by nearly half, attributing the cuts to the deployment of its own AI technology, according to a report from The Seattle Times.
In a podcast with The Logan Bartlett Show, Marc Benioff, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), detailed how AI agents are automating tasks, reflecting a broader industry shift toward AI-driven efficiency.
AI-driven automation directly reduces workforce needs
The implementation of AI agents has enabled Salesforce to reduce its human support workforce. The company has shrunk its number of support roles from 9,000 to 5,000 employees, a reduction of 4,000 positions, by automating key tasks.
This was achieved without backfilling vacant support engineer roles, as the AI platform improved operational efficiency and handled a declining number of support cases.
This workforce transformation is a direct result of AI performing a significant share of the company’s labor.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Fortune, Benioff stated that AI is currently handling up to 30% to 50% of the company’s workload, which has enabled it to redeploy hundreds of workers across other divisions.
The deposition of such employees into different segments, such as professional services, sales, and customer success, demonstrates an internal diversion rather than outright removal.
However, he notes in the podcast that these agents cannot do it all and cannot replace humans at all.
“That sales agent, there has to be a certain kind of set of guardrails, a certain personality, a certain kind of tone, the ability to know when it needs to escalate immediately to a human being because these large language models can do a lot of things, but they cannot do everything,” Benioff explains the podcast.
AI delivers productivity gains and new challenges
The rise of AI is fueling a corporate drive to slash costs and achieve greater output with fewer personnel, a trend echoed across the tech sector.
Salesforce’s experience demonstrates the tangible business benefits, with AI agents now capable of handling over 100 million customer leads that were previously unaddressed due to staffing constraints.
Though Benioff states that humans will not disappear, and that he sees collaboration between people and AI agents, the technology is already transforming some business roles and the business itself.
“Humans are not going away,” Benioff noted on the podcast. “We are working in partnership with these agents, and that’s how I look at it.”
Salesforce’s job cuts underscore a painful yet transformative industry pivot where automation handles routine tasks, while simultaneously demanding a new, collaborative partnership between humans and AI.
