Scammers pose as staffing firms, target job seekers

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Job seekers are now threatened by scammers masquerading as reputable staffing firms like Recruit Holdings, Persol Holdings, and Beacon Hill Staffing Group.
These fraudsters lure candidates with false job offers, aiming to rob personal details.
Beacon Hill advises applicants to be wary of certain signs such as being rushed into decisions, demands for money, personal details, financial information, outreach via unrelated emails or unexpected texts, and deals that appear overly attractive.
Job applicants should immediately consult their recruiter if they encounter dubious messages. Direct communication with the company’s official website is also recommended.
Scammers have become more audacious with the rise of remote work, leading to a staggering US$367 million loss in 2022 due to job and business scams, marking a 76% increase from the year prior.
The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer, referencing Federal Trade Commission data, also noted a fourfold spike in reported job and business scam cases from 2018 to 2022.
