Shopify outsources customer support to PH

Multinational e-commerce company Shopify is reportedly ramping up its customer support services by outsourcing customer-support roles to the Philippines.
According to an article by Insider, the Canada-based firm has started recruiting dozens of outsourced customer-service representatives in recent months. Many of these new hires were employed through the help of digital-outsourcing company TaskUs.
The TaskUs contractors are said to be taking on roles throughout Shopify’s support organization, including on “high-tiered” teams and on teams that work with Shopify Plus merchants. They also help merchants troubleshoot issues on their online stores.
Shopify’s outsourcing efforts came after the firm laid off about 10% — or 1,000 — of its in-house employees last July 2022.
Insider’s report noted that many companies across various segments are outsourcing their services — especially customer support roles — to cut costs amid economic uncertainty.
TaskUs CEO Bryce Maddock himself previously stated that their clients have begun to shift work they were previously doing in-house to their offshore teams “in a quest for cost savings.”
