Spain’s digital nomad visa draining LATAM tech talent

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO — Spain’s recently enacted Startup Act, which grants working visas to “digital nomads,” is reportedly draining the Latin American (LATAM) region of its tech talents.
Towards the end of 2022, headhunting firm Robert Walters reported that Mexico’s tech sector increased by 182%, and yet talent remains to be insufficient. Sixty-nine per cent of employers in the country face talent shortage.
With Spain offering one-year renewable visas to digital nomads, Mexico, along with its Latin American neighbors, could see talent drain, according to Nearshore Americas.
Beyond the pay, Spain represents an attractive option for the Latin American tech pool. In contrast with the United States, which is the main market for the export of tech services from the region, there’s no language barrier and cultural friction is a minor problem.
