Sri Lanka to rescind night working restrictions for women

Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers had agreed to revoke a law that prevents women from working legally during nightime.
In a statement, the government said that this will allows women to participate more in the Business Processs Outsourcing (BPO) industry.
“Many business institutions such as Knowledge Process Outsourcing institutions, Business Process Outsourcing institutions, Back Office and ICT enabling Services have emerged in the country around major cities,” the statement said.
“According to the nature of those institutions, the employees working there have to work according to the time of other countries.” it added.
The repealing of the law was first raised by the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment as the country’s outsourcing industry aims to compete with the global market.
Sri Lanka’s Shop and Office Employees Act No.19 of 1954 bars women from working in office beyond 06:00 PM.
