Switzerland not outsourcing asylum processing abroad

BERN, SWITZERLAND — Switzerland’s Justice Minister, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, has firmly stated that the nation’s asylum application processes will not be outsourced.
In a recent interview with the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper, Baume-Schneider emphasized Switzerland’s commitment to ethical standards and the rule of law, which she believes are incompatible with the outsourcing of such sensitive procedures.
Despite anticipating around 28,000 asylum applications in 2024, the same figure as this year, she insists that Switzerland is fully equipped to continue its humane asylum policy without resorting to foreign processing.
Outsourcing emerges as key concern for in Switzerland, particularly in its financial institutions.
The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) had earlier flagged outsourcing as a new principal risk facing the financial sector.
In its Risk Monitor 2023 report, FINMA warned financial services companies that outsourcing arrangements can increase cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Handing critical systems to vendors may limit visibility into IT controls and incident response capabilities.
