Teladoc partners with Amazon to expand chronic care access

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Teladoc Health, a leader in virtual healthcare, is prioritizing chronic condition management as a key driver for future growth.
Speaking at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, CEO Chuck Divita emphasized the company’s expansive reach, which includes 93 million members and over 10,000 clients globally.
Teladoc’s chronic care programs currently serve over 1 million active enrollees, focusing on diabetes, hypertension, pre-diabetes, and weight management through connected devices and personalized coaching.
“Chronic care management is going to continue to be an important growth driver for Teladoc,” said CFO Mala Murthy. The company aims to leverage its scale to enhance user engagement and deliver sustainable health outcomes.
Amazon partnership enhances digital health access
In a groundbreaking collaboration, Teladoc has joined Amazon’s Health Benefits Connector to expand access to its chronic condition programs. This partnership allows eligible users to seamlessly discover and enroll in Teladoc’s offerings directly through Amazon’s platform.
“This partnership helps deliver on our strategy to bring greater value to our customers in our individual solutions and across our integrated offerings,” Divita said. Amazon’s vast reach simplifies the enrollment process, addressing a significant barrier for many consumers unaware of their health plan benefits.
Teladoc is the fifth digital health company to join Amazon’s program, following others like Omada Health and Talkspace. With over half of U.S. adults managing at least one chronic condition, this collaboration positions both companies to make meaningful strides in healthcare accessibility.
BetterHelp faces challenges amid growth plans
While chronic care shows promise, Teladoc’s BetterHelp mental health platform faces headwinds. Revenue for BetterHelp fell 8% in the first nine months of 2024 due to elevated customer acquisition costs. Despite these challenges, Divita remains optimistic about its potential as a $1 billion business with plans for international expansion and insurance integration.
“We’ve had double-digit growth with BetterHelp internationally and see that continuing,” Divita noted. The platform’s AI-driven matching system connects users with therapists within 48 hours, with 72% reporting reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Teladoc balances innovation with financial pressures
Teladoc continues to face financial challenges, including a $953 million net loss in the first nine months of 2024. However, the company is optimistic about its future, citing momentum in virtual visits and membership growth. “We are a ‘show-me story’ at this point,” Divita acknowledged, emphasizing the need for execution to regain investor confidence.
By combining innovative partnerships like Amazon’s with its comprehensive virtual care offerings, Teladoc aims to solidify its position as a leader in digital healthcare while navigating market pressures.
