Thread AI raises $20Mn in Series A funding to scale AI workflows

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Thread AI, a San Francisco-based startup, has secured $20 million in Series A funding to expand its AI-powered workflow automation platform, Lemma.
The round was led by Greycroft, with participation from Scale Venture Partners, Plug-and-Play, Meritech Capital, Homebrew, and previous backer Index Ventures.
The Lemma platform lets businesses build custom AI workflows using a drag-and-drop interface and modular software components.
By offering an alternative to either rigid off-the-shelf solutions or complex custom builds, Thread AI aims to help organizations automate multistep business tasks quickly and securely.
A flexible, AI-first alternative
“Companies today face a frustrating dilemma when implementing AI, either settle for rigid, pre-built applications that force them to fit their business logic into a predefined structure, or invest heavily in talent, infrastructure, and engineering resources to build custom AI workflows from scratch,” said Angela McNeal, Co-Founder and CEO of Thread AI.
“Thread AI offers a flexible platform that lets organizations build AI workflows suited to their operations—without compromising scalability or security.”
At the core of Lemma is an enhanced version of Serverless Workflow (SWF), an open-source programming language for automation.
Thread AI’s version adds enterprise-grade features such as AI model integration, authentication, error recovery, and vulnerability scanning.
One example use case: manufacturers can create workflows that analyze equipment sensor data, detect malfunctions, trigger auto-fixes using AI, and alert technicians when needed. Lemma also supports multimodal inputs like video footage while encrypting data and scrubbing sensitive information to meet security requirements.
Early traction and growth plans
Thread AI claims its platform has improved process speed by up to 70% for early users.
“Enterprises need more than AI-powered apps—they need a secure, scalable infrastructure that evolves with their business,” said Mark Terbeek, Partner at Greycroft.
“Thread AI provides a powerful, adaptable platform that helps organizations implement AI at scale.”
The company plans to use the fresh funding to grow its commercial team and accelerate adoption of Lemma across industries seeking integrated AI solutions.
As enterprise demand shifts from narrow automation tools to broader, composable AI ecosystems, Thread AI appears well-positioned to offer the infrastructure needed to bridge that gap.
