PUNE, INDIA — Thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology has opened a global capability center (GCC) in Pune, India, where more than 120 engineers already work on software, hardware, systems and mechanical development for international customer programs. The automotive supplier plans to grow the team to more than 300 over the coming years.
Engineering for software-defined vehicles
The center, inaugurated on Oct. 9, focuses on embedded systems, functional safety, cybersecurity and advanced chassis technologies, including next-generation steering and chassis systems, the company said in a statement. Engineers in Pune work with international development teams throughout the development lifecycle.
“The transformation of the automotive industry is increasingly driven by software, electronics and globally connected engineering teams,” said Viktor Molnar, chief operating officer of Thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology. “India offers an outstanding pool of engineering and software talent and will play an increasingly important role in our global development network.”
Why Pune
The company chose Pune for its established automotive industry, engineering and software ecosystem, leading universities and broad talent pool. The center sits in Solitaire Business Hub 2 in the Baner-Balewadi business district, and recruitment will first focus on software, hardware and mechanical engineering roles.
“Pune is much more than an additional development location for us. We are building a key engineering hub that is fully integrated into our global R&D network,” said Björn Erbe, senior vice president of research and development for the chassis business.
More than an engineering site
The GCC is part of a wider India push. Thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology is setting up a sales team in Pune to work with Indian carmakers, India is becoming an increasingly important sourcing hub for the company, and it intends to build local production if it wins matching customer projects.
Plans for the Pune site were first announced in 2025. The Automotive Technology segment generated sales of around €7 billion (about $7.9 billion) in fiscal 2024/2025 across more than 90 locations.
For manufacturers weighing a global capability center (GCC) in India, the move shows engineering work, not only back-office tasks, shifting into captive centers. Firms that want similar capacity without building their own can compare a captive with a provider-run global delivery center using the top BPO companies worldwide list.
