Title inflation hits India’s workforce, Indeed finds

HARYANA, INDIA — 1 in 3 Indian professionals received a promotion with no salary increase or less than 5% pay rise, as 80% report designation inflation is widespread and organizations are substituting title upgrades for compensation, according to Indeed’s Quarterly Hiring Tracker.

Title upgrades replacing pay rises across Indian workplaces

Sashi Kumar, managing director of Indeed India, said “Titles matter because they signal opportunity and capability, but they work best when they reflect genuine career progression rather than substitute for it.”

The Indeed Quarterly Hiring Tracker, covering Indian professionals who received title changes within two years, found 60% believe their current designation misaligns with their compensation.

52% of professionals said they would prioritize higher salary over a better title, while 57% confirmed organizations are using upgraded designations as a retention tool that substitutes for pay. 70% believe designation influences future career opportunities and 73% say stronger titles improve employer perception during hiring.

80% of India’s professionals see designation inflation as widespread, while 60% say their title does not reflect their actual compensation level.

Promotions without pay signal growing India workforce mismatch

Kumar added that titles “work best when they reflect genuine career progression rather than substitute for it,” responding to data showing 57% of Indian professionals say their job satisfaction is significantly tied to their designation.

57% of organizations confirm they use title upgrades as a tool for attracting and retaining talent they cannot match on compensation, while 57% of professionals say designation significantly impacts their job satisfaction.

70% believe designation influences future career opportunities and 73% report stronger titles improve how employers perceive them in hiring, creating demand for title upgrades that bears no correlation to pay.

52% of professionals said they would choose higher salary over a better title given the option, indicating designation-led retention serves employer convenience rather than worker preference.

When title inflation substitutes for pay, compensation benchmarks become unreliable, and offshore hiring decisions built on them carry hidden risk.

The title inflation Indeed documents in India has direct bearing on offshore team-building, where designation-to-pay misalignment creates a gap between the seniority a candidate presents and the compensation expectations they carry.

Business process outsourcing (BPO) operators with structured grading systems that link title to verified capability and market-rate pay are better positioned to build offshore teams that perform to their designated seniority.

Leading BPO operators with transparent compensation frameworks and skills-verified role definitions offer clients a reliable alternative to India’s widening designation uncertainty.
