TRAI seeks to boost India’s ICT R&D capabilities
NEW DELHI, INDIA — The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently introduced a Consultation Paper to enhance India’s research and development (R&D) in the telecom, broadcasting, and ICT sectors.
This move aims to create a strong R&D talent base, aligning with the government’s self-reliance and export growth vision.
R&D is pivotal for economic growth and living standards. India’s achievements, including its top position in Central and Southern Asia and 40th rank globally, are due to efforts like Make in India and Digital India.
However, gaps remain in India’s ICT R&D ecosystem. TRAI’s paper outlines existing gaps and recommends policy shifts and incentives to bridge them.
The document also emphasizes the importance of government, industry, and academia collaboration in embracing technologies such as 5G, 6G, and AI. Additionally, it references R&D strategies from top-performing nations, including Israel, South Korea, the United States (U.S.), Sweden, and Japan.
Feedback on this proposal is open until October 23, 2023, and counter-comments can be submitted up to November 6, 2023.
