Trump 2.0 sparks political tensions in U.S. workplaces – Resume Now survey

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Since U.S. President Donald Trump’s reelection, the American workplace has become a hotspot for political debates, transforming previously casual conversations into sources of serious conflict.

A Resume Now survey shows that the majority of employees are experiencing increased tensions and avoiding colleagues with opposing viewpoints since Trump’s return to office.

Political divisions creating workplace rifts

The survey conducted among 1,037 American workers on January 28 revealed that 91% of employees report witnessing or experiencing political clashes at work, while 81% feel workplace tension has increased significantly.

These divisions are affecting productivity, with 51% of workers actively avoiding collaboration with colleagues holding different political views.

The frequency of political discussions has also increased, with 79% of employees engaging in political talk at least weekly and 32% discussing politics daily.

“Political conversations are no longer just a side topic—they’re shaping workplace culture and fueling divisions,” says Keith Spencer, career expert at Resume Now.

“Companies must find a way to balance free expression with maintaining a professional, inclusive environment.”

Employees seeking management intervention

The survey reveals a strong desire for leadership to address these issues. Ninety-two percent of workers would support company policies limiting political discussions at work.

Beyond the immediate workplace atmosphere, employees express concerns about how political bias might affect their careers. A troubling 90% believe political bias impacts promotions, raises, or other workplace opportunities.

As political tensions continue to rise, with 83% anticipating increased workplace political tensions under Trump compared to the Biden administration, employers face mounting pressure to create environments where diverse viewpoints can coexist without undermining workplace harmony and productivity.
