U.S. staffing industry’s average weekly employment up 2.8Mn in 2022

WASHINGTON D.C., UNITED STATES — The average weekly employment of the American staffing industry employed an average of 2.8 million temporary and contract workers per week in 2022, according to data by the American Staffing Association (ASA).
That is above the 2.7 million weekly average in 2021.
In addition, staffing jobs rose 2.1% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022.
ASA President and CEO Richard Wahlquist said that demand for staffing services remained healthy in the United States (U.S.) amid a tight labor market and continued economic uncertainty.
“U.S. businesses recognize that staffing companies are uniquely equipped to meet the hiring challenges of today and provide them with the workers and the workforce agility they need to compete, grow, and thrive in the coming year,” he added.
The survey found that staffing employment and sales in the U.S. have historically seen quarter-over-quarter gains following first-quarter declines.
Q3 figures showed a slight deviation from this trend as staffing jobs slightly decreased by 0.3% from the second quarter — about 9,000 jobs — but temporary and contract staffing sales grew by 1.4%.
Overall, temporary and contract staffing sales totaled $39.0 billion in Q3, up 7.9% y-o-y.
For full-year 2022 revenue, ASA expects staffing firms’ revenue to grow by 10.5% y-o-y. Meanwhile, 2023 is projected to grow 10.0% y-o-y.
