Uganda expects BPO to boost job creation
KAMPALA, UGANDA — The Government of Uganda announced plans to expand its Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector to increase employment opportunities for its citizens.
The BPO industry, involving the contracting of specific business operations to third-party providers, has seen substantial growth in the country over the past decade.
According to Evelyn Anite, State Minister of Finance in charge of Investment and Privatization, Uganda has significant potential to attract and thrive in the BPO industry due to its large English-speaking population.
“There are countries in Asia and Eastern Europe that are already reaping big from the Business Process Outsourcing industry, but we Ugandans speak better English than them… Ugandans can do the job better, and our young and enthusiastic population makes it perfect for the business.”
Anite also stated that the outsourcing industry would provide the jobs needed to employ the youth and able senior citizens in the country.
She also expressed gratitude towards the partners of Okapi BPO, which operates in multiple countries, including Canada. She assured them of the Ugandan government’s support, adding, “Our government is already dedicating sufficient BPO sustenance.”
The state minister’s view came after several key players in the BPO sector expressed their belief that Uganda could become a top BPO destination due to its young, educated workforce.
It also comes five months after the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance and the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Innovation Council held a stakeholder consultative workshop to discuss the National BPO Policy in the country.
