91% of UK workers hit by high stress, burnout — Mental Health UK

LONDON, ENGLAND — A stark new report from Mental Health United Kingdom reveals that 91% of UK adults experienced high or extreme stress in the past year, with burnout rates remaining critically high.

The 2026 Burnout Report underscores a worsening crisis among young workers and systemic failures in workplace support, framing poor mental health as a major driver of economic inactivity.

“For many, the anxiety, sleeplessness, or the growing sense that work is taking more than it gives back is compounding the pressure being felt,” said Brian Dow, Chief Executive at Mental Health UK.

“Our findings reveal that workplace support for people recovering from burnout is often inadequate, revealing a clear gap between what employers say regarding mental health at work and what they actually offer employees.”

Burnout rates peak across UK demographics

The report notes, “Our findings reveal a worrying picture of a generation under sustained pressure, with clear implications for employers, government, and wider society.”

The figures indicate that the problem is prevalent: 93% of employees in Wales and Scotland and 95% of the unemployed are experiencing burnout, suggesting it is not unique to employed adults.

There is a high level of demographic inequality in this crisis. The most stressed adults, now aged 25-34, have also increased to 96%, replacing the 35-44-year-olds from the previous year.

The gender gap is also very high, and 96% of women claim they are under extreme stress compared to 86% of men. Unpaid overtime (33%), high workloads (42%), and fear of being sacked and job security (32%) have remained among the highest workplace motivators; hence, there is still a pressure environment.

“Burnout is not inevitable. It is the outcome of how our working environments are designed and how employees are supported,” said Dow.

Young workers face the toughest strain

Employees aged 18 to 24 are the most vulnerable to burnout pressures and their adverse consequences and thus are at the center of the burnout crisis

Ninety-three percent of this population group were highly stressed, and 39% spontaneously left the workday because of a low mental state, a 3% higher rate than in 2025. They mention distinct drivers, including high workloads (57%), additional paid work (51%), and workplace isolation (45%).

There is no relief in life, as the consequences are felt in the workplace. Beyond work, 65% of young adults said they were struggling with poor sleep, 64% with money worries, and 60% with feeling isolated, all of which were also cited as causes of burnout.

Moreover, they are losing their ease of seeking support; 39% are not comfortable informing a manager about their stress, 5% per year. This combination creates a “crisis of opportunity” for a generation at risk of being shaped by sustained pressure.

Workplace recovery efforts falling short

The report states that there is a severe disparity between the employer’s will and the practical support, with employees exposed upon returning to their jobs.

Worryingly, only 27% of employees who left due to stress were assisted upon returning. Seventeen percent had a formal return-to-work plan, and only 11% had regular well-being meetings with their manager, leaving them to default to business-as-usual.

Employees see mental health programs as a shallow way of addressing issues. Eighteen percent of respondents said that mental health is a tick-box exercise, and 29% said that managers do not have time or training or even resources to offer meaningful support, even if the employers themselves raise awareness on mental health.

Such inconsistency is further complicated among certain groups; 68% of women between 45 and 54 years of age reported having perimenopausal symptoms as a contributor to burnout, a domain that the research has just shed some light on.

“Employers’ intentions are good, but workers say that mental health is not meaningfully acted upon,” the report stated.

Call for action: Building sustainable recovery

In line with the government’s Keep Britain Working Review, Mental Health UK urges an urgent, joint effort to end the cycle of productivity doom. As the report notes, “Recovery is not about bouncing back instantly; it is about rebuilding in a way that is sustainable and suited to each individual’s circumstances.”

“With the right understanding and commitment, we can create workplaces that not only prevent harm, but actively promote good mental health and ensure that people feel valued, engaged, and fulfilled in their work,” Dow said.

Their suggestions are addressed to employers, who should develop explicit mental health strategies, train managers to handle them, manage workplace demands, and periodically conduct risk assessments.

The report suggests that prevention should begin in the workplace to develop environments where people not only work well but also stay well.

The data shows that sustained high stress and inadequate support, if unaddressed, risk corroding workforce resilience, economic productivity, and the social contract of work itself.
