Upskilling is key to empowering employees, experts say

DUBLIN, IRELAND — With the rising industry changes and shrinking labor market, various experts believe that more businesses are now focused on upskilling their existing employees to stay competitive.
Due to a shortage of adequately trained graduates, companies are finding it more viable to cultivate talent from within.
“Upskilling and reskilling are critical not only for the business but also for the employees – allowing them to feel more empowered, ensuring their skills are fit for the future and thereby providing an opportunity for them to add greater value to the organization,” said Gerard McDonough, partner, PwC People & Organisation.
Professor Joe Peppard of UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School added that additional training develops problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and digital competencies beyond specific work tasks.
Keavy Gorman, Director of People Development for UK & Ireland at telecom company Three, also champions upskilling as a future job preparation strategy.
He added that their in-house learning academies offer a range of skill-development courses focusing on digital literacy, data analysis, interpersonal skills, and leadership.
With the assistance of agencies like Skillnet Ireland, businesses are advised to strategize talent development plans. As per Jenny Hayes, Head of Ibec Academy, “Attracting and retaining talent is challenging; hence, upskilling frontline managers has become vital.”
Ultimately, McDonough stressed that the need for a culture of continuous learning is paramount, as today’s skills might not suffice for tomorrow’s challenges.
