US firm Vantage launches new R15bn-worth data center in SA

Hyperscale data center provider Vantage Data Centres announced that it has begun construction of the new state‐of‐the‐art data center campus worth R15 billion (approximately USD 1 billion) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In a statement, the company says the first phase of the campus is scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2022. This will be the firm’s first data center in SA and on the African continent.
According to Vantage’s statement, hyperscale data centers allow large tech companies, cloud providers, and enterprises to increase their computing capability rapidly.
Vantage EMEA president Antoine Boniface said that they chose to expand in Johannesburg because of its “IT ecosystem, fiber connectivity to the rest of Africa, and the availability of renewable energy.”
Local real estate firm Attacq is helping Vantage build a campus that is tailored to the company’s requirements and needs.
This new project will increase Vantage’s global footprint to five continents — including North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East.
