US, UK agrees to a data sharing ‘cloud act’ agreement

The United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) meets to a data sharing agreement coined as the ‘Cloud Act’ which will help fight terrorism and trafficking.
The ‘Cloud Act’ surfaced on Monday and the US DoJ described it as a first agreement of its kind, giving each country’s investigators access to vital information meant to combat serious crime in a way that’s consistent with privacy and civil liberties standards.
The Agreement specifies, “Service providers in one country may respond to qualifying, lawful orders for electronic data issued by the other country,” without “running afoul of restrictions on cross-border disclosures.”
The US and the UK concur that Data Access Agreement sets out numerous requirements that must be met for both authorities to invoke the agreement.
