Vietnam’s IDEA Group opens Houston office amid U.S. talent crunch

TEXAS, UNITED STATES — As United States manufacturers struggle to recruit mechanical engineers amid rising costs and hiring inflexibility, Vietnam-based engineering services firm IDEA Group has expanded into Houston, Texas.
The new office aims to provide flexible product design and development support through offshore and hybrid engineering teams, addressing a market where 56% of mechanical engineering roles require permanent full-time hires despite fluctuating project demands.
Labor market gaps drive demand for flexible engineering
An IDEA Group representative noted, “Manufacturers face pressure to accelerate product development while managing engineering costs.”
With average national salaries for these positions reaching approximately $105,609 per year, or about $50.8 per hour, manufacturers face high fixed costs for talent acquisition.
In contrast, 56% of available positions are full-time roles, forcing companies into permanent hiring commitments that may not align with cyclical project workloads.
For manufacturers managing multiple product development cycles, this rigid hiring environment creates inefficiencies, making it difficult to scale engineering resources up or down as project timelines accelerate.
IDEA Group’s entry into the Houston market directly targets this pain point by offering distributed engineering models that allow clients to bypass traditional recruitment cycles and access external teams for mechanical design, CAD modeling, and technical documentation as needed.
Dual-service model combines offshore capacity with U.S. presence
IDEA Group’s Houston operations introduce two distinct service models designed to alleviate capacity constraints for U.S. manufacturers.
The first provides machine design support through offshore engineering teams in Vietnam, effectively extending clients’ internal design departments with resources dedicated to industrial machinery design, 3D CAD modeling, sheet metal engineering, reverse engineering, and design documentation across major CAD platforms.
The second model offers contract CAD engineers who can integrate with client teams remotely, in hybrid arrangements, or on-site, depending on specific project requirements.
The company representative notes, “By combining our U.S. presence in Houston with offshore engineering teams in Vietnam, we help manufacturers access experienced CAD engineering support while potentially improving efficiency by up to 50% compared with traditional in-house hiring.”
With over 15 years of experience and a team of more than 170 mechanical design engineers, the firm has completed over 1,000 projects for 250+ clients worldwide.
It provides CAD engineering, drafting, and machine design services to manufacturers across North America, Japan, and other global markets, with a focus on industrial equipment, automation, and product manufacturing.
The expansion could further position Texas as a strategic hub for cross-border engineering partnerships, offering manufacturers another avenue to stay competitive as industrial investment continues to grow across the world.
