BANGALORE, INDIA — IT giant Wipro recently revamped its hiring strategy, shifting from offering 30% salary hikes to rewarding premium pay for employees with niche skills. 

During an interview with Times of India, Wipro President and Chief Human Resources Officer Saurabh Govil explained that high attrition rates and abundant opportunities in 2021 led to a hiring trend of a straight 30% salary increment.

However, with the change in circumstances, Govil stated that this trend won’t continue. 

Now, the focus is on acquiring employees with specialized skills in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, who will be entitled to premium pay.

Wipro also plans to automate a significant portion of its HR functions, aiming for 80% of queries to be resolved by bots. This shift will free HR professionals to act more as coaches, focusing on building and managing teams effectively.

Moreover, Govil added that Wipro now expects its employees to work from the office at least three times a week. However, unlike other tech giants, the company hasn’t made this a mandatory policy due to employee resistance and the belief that working from home does not affect productivity.

Wipro’s hiring strategy adjustment follows reports that 92% of fresh graduates the firm had hired received a lower annual salary offer of Rs 3.5 lakh (US$4,244), significantly lower than the previous offer of Rs 6.5 lakh (US$7,883).
