Wipro makes three-day office work compulsory under new hybrid policy

BENGALURU, INDIA—IT giant Wipro announced that it is launching a new hybrid work policy that requires employees to spend at least three days in the office. This move is part of Wipro’s efforts to join the ranks of industry leaders seeking a balance between flexibility and face time.

“At Wipro, we have taken a modern approach to the future of work – one that focuses equally on well-being of our associates while being a high performing culture, driven by collaboration,” Saurabh Govil, Wipro’s Chief Human Resources Officer, said in a LinkedIn post.

Flexibility and purpose-driven approach

The policy, designed with flexibility in mind, allows employees to choose their in-office days, with remote work options available for the other two days each week.

According to Govil, the company’s approach is rooted in principles of collaboration, flexibility, sensitivity to and inclusive of special needs, and trust.

“We expect associates to work from the office premises three days a week, choosing these days based on their need to collaborate. Our approach also has the option for associates to seek remote working for specified days in a year, to care for self or as they nurse loved ones back to health,” Govil added.

Industry-wide shift to office presence

Wipro’s decision follows similar moves by other major IT firms:

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) implemented a five-day office attendance requirement last year.
  • HCLTech requires employees to be physically present in the office at least three days a week and those who fail to meet the attendance requirement will face deductions from their leave balance.
  • Infosys has mandated at least 10 days of office work per month for its staff.
  • IBM directed employees to work from the office at least three days a week and relocate within 50 miles of an IBM office or client location.
  • Meta instituted a three-day office work policy in September.

Outside the IT sector, other tech giants are also adjusting their work policies. Amazon’s CEO, Andrew Jassy, announced that corporate workers must return to the office five days a week starting January 2025, citing the need to enhance collaboration and company culture. Similarly, Disney now requires staff to be in the office four days a week.

As the tech industry continues to evolve its approach to work arrangements, Wipro’s new policy represents a balanced attempt to harness the benefits of both in-person and remote work.
