More workers prefer in-person work despite remote trend – survey

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — Despite the rise of remote work opportunities, the majority of employees still crave in-person interaction, according to a ResumeBuilder survey

The survey, based on 1,250 full-time workers, found that seven in 10 employees do not want to work fully remotely. Forty percent prefer being in-person at an office or workplace, while 32% want a hybrid model with some remote days.

“While the desire for some in-office presence remains prevalent, the extent of this preference remains subject to flux,” said Stacie Haller, Chief Career Advisor at ResumeBuilder.com.

“It’s clear that a one-size-fits-all approach is no longer tenable in today’s diverse workforce landscape.”

Of those preferring hybrid work, 41% said three days per week in the office is ideal, while 27% want two days in person.

Reasons for on-site work: Communication and Collaboration

Employees cited social interaction (58%), faster communication (47%), easier collaboration (47%), and work-life separation (46%) as the top reasons for wanting in-person work time.

“Our survey illustrates that a significant majority of workers value the opportunity for in-person social interaction and collaboration with colleagues, but to varying degrees,” Haller added.

Meanwhile, flexibility (70%), work-life balance (67%), and lack of commute (65%) were the main draws of remote work cited by employees.

Workforce dynamics and actions for change

Interestingly, 53% of employees who desire a change in their work arrangement have taken proactive steps to achieve it, including proposing new schedules (64%) or seeking new employment opportunities (49%).

“Employees who find themselves in environments that do not align with their preferences should feel empowered to advocate for arrangements that better suit their needs,” said Haller.

The findings from this survey highlight that while remote work has gained traction, traditional and hybrid work models still hold significant appeal due to their social and operational benefits.
