Workplace volunteer programs boost employee satisfaction and retention – Deloitte survey

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Deloitte has unveiled compelling evidence that workplace volunteer opportunities play a crucial role in employee satisfaction and retention.
The study, conducted by Deloitte’s Purpose and DEI Office, surveyed 1,000 U.S. office professionals between April 4 and April 15, 2024. It revealed that 95% of respondents believe it’s important for their employer to make a positive impact in their community.
The power of volunteerism in the workplace
The survey further details that workplace volunteer opportunities promote a deeper community connection and overall morale among employees.
Respondents who participated in such programs reported increased fulfillment (56%), community ties (55%), overall morale and teamwork (52%), and pride in their employer (49%).
Moreover, 91% of respondents indicated that volunteer opportunities can positively influence their overall work experience and connection to their employer. Eighty-seven percent of those surveyed consider workplace volunteer opportunities a factor in their decision to stay with their current employer or pursue a new one.
Kwasi Mitchell, Chief Purpose and DEI Officer at Deloitte, emphasized the importance of these findings, stating, “This data clearly shows a call to action for organizations nationwide – employer-led volunteer opportunities can foster in-person connection and create opportunities for positive community impact that employees increasingly look for in the workplace.”
Building connections and inspiring further volunteerism
The survey also revealed a ripple effect of workplace volunteerism.
An impressive 90% of respondents reported that their participation in workplace volunteer activities led to additional, independent volunteering activities within their communities.
Additionally, nearly half (49%) indicated that these programs helped build stronger connections with colleagues.
“Work is about more than just the job at hand, as employees seek out connection and the opportunity to make an impact in their communities – and employers who share those same values,” said Dana O’Donovan, Leader of Social Impact and Monitor Institute by Deloitte.
