234K U.S. tech jobs open despite May employment dip

ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES — Nearly 234,000 tech positions in the United States (U.S.) are open despite a slight reduction in tech sector employment last month.
According to an analysis by CompTIA, a nonprofit association for the IT industry and workforce, while tech companies cut their headcount by 4,725 jobs in May, the overall tech occupations throughout the economy grew by 45,000.
The unemployment rate for tech roles dropped marginally from 2.1% to 2.0%, notably below the national figure of 3.7%.
The available job postings indicate a robust demand for software developers, IT project managers, data analysts, and IT support specialists.
Approximately 20% of the job postings are for roles in emerging technologies or jobs requiring emerging tech skills, including about 15,000 openings related to artificial intelligence.
“Reassuringly the positives for the month outweigh the negatives, confirming the tech workforce remains on solid footing,” said Tim Herbert, chief research officer, CompTIA.
Cities leading in tech job postings included New York City, Washington, Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles, with the biggest month-over-month increases recorded in Atlanta, Austin, St. Louis, San Jose, and Phoenix.
