Robots to work with humans, not replace them

face to face

With just a few taps on a tablet screen, a robotic arm learns a new movement and does it repeatedly. This illustrates the potential of AI in the workplace.

According to Shermine Gotfredsen, Universal Robots general manager for Asia and Oceania, Pick and Place movements can be instrumental in assisting humans in farms and factories. Even in the hospitality industry. She also mentioned that it is highly unlikely for robots to replace humans entirely since only ten percent of jobs can be replaced by AI. Moreover, up to 2 million jobs can be created since machines need humans to operate them.

She said, “I don’t think robots will come in and take over human jobs. Instead, humans can take this opportunity to upskill to operate the machines and use the tech to support their work.”

The rise of Automation and Artificial Intelligence is felt in the BPO industry in the Philippines. Thus the government pushing call center workers to upskill to adapt to the automation wave.

Investments in “collaborative robots” cost from 20,000 to 30,000 euros (P1.28 million to P1.92 million), per Gotfredsen. The robot arm can mimic and replicate the movements of the human arm thus automating repetitive tasks.

The article shows that Artificial Intelligence and employees can work hand in hand. Let’s not be intimidated by automation and but instead let’s improve our skills and use this to our advantage.
