O2 Telefónica to sell two call centers and nearly 430 staff to TP

- O2 Telefónica is selling its Rostock and Bremen call centers to TP.
- The two sites employ nearly 430 people: about 240 in Rostock, 180 in Bremen.
- TP’s purchase needs antitrust approval and should close at the turn of the year.
- Telefónica Deutschland plans to cut 1,100 jobs this year, about one in six.
MUNICH, GERMANY — O2 Telefónica is selling its call centers in Rostock and Bremen, with nearly 430 employees in total, to French call center operator TP. The sale still needs approval from antitrust authorities and is expected to close at the turn of the year.
A smaller in-house network
The company announced the sale in Munich, and the purchase price was not disclosed. O2 Telefónica will keep its call centers in Hamburg, Potsdam and Nuremberg, CIO.de reported on Nov. 2, carrying a report from German news agency dpa.
About 240 people work at the Rostock site and around 180 in Bremen. TP, formerly known as Teleperformance, already works for companies in the automotive, technology and insurance industries.
TP wants “to use the long-standing, trusting partnership with Telefónica to ensure a smooth transition for employees and customers,” said TP executive Rainer Majcen. TP plans to integrate the Rostock and Bremen sites into its international network and strengthen them, according to the report.
Part of 1,100 job cuts
O2 Telefónica is under pressure, with revenue and operating profit falling. Major customer 1&1 switched to rival Vodafone in 2024, and the company still feels the effects of that loss.
Its longtime chief executive left, and Santiago Argelich Hesse has led the company since the start of the year. In the summer, the company announced that 1,100 jobs would go this year, about one in six, from 6,820 full-time positions at Telefónica Deutschland at the start of the year. The call center sale is part of those cuts.
Self-service reshapes support
O2 Telefónica said customer service is undergoing a profound change, partly because customers increasingly turn to self-service options.
“We have to reflect these developments in our organization and our service concepts,” said Mallik Rao, chief operating officer of Telefónica Deutschland. “The specialist TP has the resources, the size and the expertise to develop customer services in a future-proof way.”
What it means for buyers
O2 Telefónica is handing its Rostock and Bremen call centers to an outside operator while keeping its sites in Hamburg, Potsdam and Nuremberg. For TP, the deal builds on its long-standing partnership with Telefónica.
