CV, age and native English fail to predict a good hire: VA Masters

Key facts
  • VA Masters analyzed 166,350 applications from January 2025 to July 2026.
  • Groups rated 1.76 and 1.71 on CVs scored 3.51 and 2.40 on a practical task.
  • The median age was 28 to 31 in every rejection category across 16,308 decisions.

Four of the things employers screen hardest on, the CV, age, native-level English and geographic distance, turn out not to predict what hiring managers assume they predict, according to a 19-month analysis of 166,350 applications by VA Masters.

The analysis draws together a series of studies of the company’s own recruitment pipeline, Alon Pearl, founder and CEO of VA Masters, writes in a feature shared with Outsource Accelerator. The applications were processed between January 2025 and July 2026.

Same CV rating, opposite results

The CV finding rests on 16,308 recorded rejection decisions from January 2025 to September 2026. VA Masters publishes its methodology alongside its Filipino virtual assistant workforce dataset.

Candidates rejected for thin experience averaged 1.76 on the company’s internal five-point CV rating and scored 3.51 on the practical task.

Candidates who failed the task averaged 1.71 on the CV and scored 2.40. “Same document, opposite outcomes,” Pearl writes.

Age shows no pattern

In the same dataset, the median age sits between 28 and 31 in every rejection category. No group was rejected more often on the basis of age.

Pearl presents it as a negative result, not as a claim about anyone’s conduct.

Native English and distance

As OA reported on Oct. 30, candidates who declared native-level English were placed at 1 in 488, against 1 in 469 for fluent, across 136,215 applications from February to August 2026. The difference is negligible and runs marginally the wrong way.

As OA reported on Oct. 15, roles from U.S. clients 12 to 15 hours from Manila filled in a median of 12 days, against 10 for other regions, across 318 roles opened from February to August 2026. Pearl reads the gap as too small to show an effect either way.

What does predict

What separates candidates is “the demonstration rather than the document,” Pearl writes. VA Masters now screens candidates with practical task simulations built around the specific role.

On the work side, ambiguity rather than volume shapes the roles. Those that resist a clean handover are the ones where decisions have not been made in advance.

One pipeline, described honestly

The analyses describe what passes through VA Masters, not the offshore hiring market as a whole.

English level is declared by the candidate and corrected by evaluators where an assessment shows it is inaccurate, so it is not an independent language test.

Clients who reach VA Masters through search and AI assistants are likely more comfortable with technology than the average small business, which may lift its AI figures. Its expansion figures should be read as indicative rather than precise.

What it means for employers

For businesses hiring a virtual assistant through offshore outsourcing, the data points to a practical task over a CV screen, with the language bar set at fluent. Buyers comparing providers can start with OA’s list of the top 40 BPO companies in the Philippines.

VA Masters is a global recruitment agency founded in 2021 that places vetted Filipino virtual assistants with businesses across the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada and Europe. It has completed more than 1,000 placements.
