Native English gives VA candidates no edge over fluent: VA Masters

- VA Masters analyzed 136,215 applications received from February to August 2026.
- Native-level candidates were placed at 1 in 488; fluent candidates at 1 in 469.
- Conversational candidates were placed at 1 in 1,301.
- Skills-test completion was 7.4% at every declared level from conversational to native.
MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Among 136,215 virtual assistant applications filed between February and August 2026, candidates who declared native-level English were placed no more often than those who declared fluent English. The gap that mattered sat lower down the scale, where fluent candidates were placed at nearly three times the rate of conversational ones.
A negligible gap at the top
Native-level candidates were placed at 1 in 488, according to an analysis published by VA Masters. Fluent candidates were placed at 1 in 469, a marginally higher rate than the native group.
Conversational candidates were placed at 1 in 1,301, roughly a third of the fluent rate.
“The distinction that matters in this market is between conversational and fluent. Above fluent, further language signalling adds nothing measurable. An employer screening for native-level English is filtering their pool without improving it,” said Alon Pearl, founder and CEO of VA Masters.
Most applicants already claim fluency
Some 60.0% of applicants declare fluent or native English, rising to 81.6% among placed candidates. Sales and business development drew the highest share at 63.5%, while finance and accounting drew the lowest at 48.9%.
Skills-test completion was 7.4% at every declared level from conversational to native. The company says this shows a weaker language level affects the outcome, not the willingness to try.
English level is declared by the candidate and corrected by evaluators where an assessment shows it is inaccurate. The analysis describes what candidates declare and what that declaration predicts, not an independent language assessment.
What it means for employers
VA Masters’ data previously showed that U.S. clients 12 hours from Manila fill VA roles in 12 days.
For employers hiring a virtual assistant through offshore outsourcing, the figures place the useful language screen at fluency, the level above which placement rates stop rising. Buyers can compare providers among the top 40 BPO companies in the Philippines.
