FedEx Set to Return to Philippines But China Will Remain Primary Asia-Pacific Hub

FedEx, the US logistics giant, is to reestablish a Philippines operation as part of its wider Asia expansion, while maintaining a substantial presence in China. The Tennessee-headquartered company, however, indicated that the mainland will continue to function as its primary Asia-Pacific hub, while its planned operation in the Philippines’ Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zone (CFEZ) will focus on better serving its customers in the country. In a prepared statement, FedEx confirmed that it remained committed to its customers and employees throughout the Asia-Pacific region, including those in China and the Philippines, and will continue to make the strategic investments required to grow its service offering, improve its network and provide greater global connectivity.

It also denied there was any truth in an earlier news report, which had quoted Jose Manuel Romualdez, the Philippine ambassador to the US, as saying the company was planning to relocate its primary Asia-Pacific hub from China to the Philippines. In addition to FedEx’s own statement, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), the Philippines’ government body with responsibility for the CFEZ, also denied the report, with Vince Dizon, its president, stressing the logistics company’s return to the country forms part of its ongoing expansion across the Asia-Pacific region and is not a sign that it is considering pulling out of China.
