Jamaica will implement digital services strategy

The Jamaican government will move ahead with its plans to implement the five-year national Global Digital Services Strategy which will increase employment to 70,000 jobs by 2025.
In a closing statement in the Parliament, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said that the figure increased from the current 40,000 jobs in the digital sector and the strategy will facilitate further expansion of the industry.
Additionally, he also announced that support was provided to the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector to help in the adjustments made to business models – including work-from-home arrangements and in-meeting, social-distancing protocols – in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Despite early job losses, with the support provided, the sector rebounded with Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) facilitating the expansion of five companies with the potential to add 3,000 new BPO jobs to the sector,” Bartlett added.
He concluded his statement by saying that supporting the investment into this sector is crucial as it has a “critical and strategic role” in the country’s development.
