Lower unemployment rate not enough for PH job market
Despite the government’s assertion of the lower unemployment rate in the Philippines, Pasajob CEO Kristen Mariano said that the country’s job market has not fully recovered from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview with ANC, Mariano stated, “The new jobs created by the government are more of the informal, and irregular jobs. They do not really replace the jobs that were lost pre-pandemic, and so, I think we still need to re-skill and reallocate people to more skilled jobs.”
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority data, the country had an unemployment rate of 7.7% last May. That is equivalent to 3.73 million unemployed individuals.
With the threat of COVID-19’s Delta variant, Mariano said entry-level low-skilled jobs are again at risk.
