Google offers on-site hotel deals to entice office return

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Tech giant Google hopes to lure employees back to the office with its new on-site hotel special.
Launched as a “Summer Special” deal, employees can book an on-campus hotel room in Mountain View, California, at $99 a night.
“Just imagine no commute to the office in the morning, and instead, you could have an extra hour of sleep and less friction,” the description reads. “Next, you could walk out of your room and quickly grab a delicious breakfast or get a workout in before work starts.”
The ad also stated that after the work day ends, “you could enjoy a quiet evening on top of the rooftop deck or take in one of the fun local activities.”
The Google-owned hotel is on a newer Mountain View, California campus. The 42-acre campus is adjacent to NASA’s Ames Research Center and can house 4,000 employees working on its ads products.
The offer has garnered diverse reactions from employees. Internal forums buzz with memes, some playfully refusing the offer, while others jest about paying their employer for accommodation. Some find the hotel’s amenities a good deal compared to their homes, but others deem it pricey.
Lately, Google has intensified efforts to boost office attendance, even tying it to performance metrics and asking remote-approved staff to rethink their choices.
