AI paves way for 4-day workweek – study
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — Artificial intelligence (AI) may pave the way for approximately 30% of employees in both the United Kingdom and the United States to transition to a four-day workweek by the year 2033, a recent study by the research institute Autonomy suggests.
The study underscores the possibility that productivity driven by AI could shorten workweek to 32 hours from the traditional 40 hours, without compromising work output or earnings.
Specifically, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT used in workplaces could augment roles and give employees more free time while maintaining output.
“This study tries to show that when the technology is deployed to its full potential, but the purpose of the technology is shifted, it can not only improve work practices, but also improve work-life balance,” Will Stronge, Autonomy’s director of research explained.
The UK analysis predicts 28 million British workers, especially in London, Elmbridge, and Wokingham, could see at least a 10% cut in hours through adopting LLMs.
Echoing this, Autonomy’s U.S. study expects 35 million American workers to similarly transition by 2033.
Autonomy urges governments and companies in both countries to lead in responsibly deploying workplace AI.
